How to become a driving instructor?

Three stage process you'll need to complete before you qualify, making it very important to choose the correct driving school.

  • Part 1 Theory Test

    The theory test consists of 100 multiple choice questions and 14 hazard perception clips. Our qualified driving instructors can explain this part of the test to you in order for you to prepare and be successful on the day.


    The test will last for 90 minutes.

  • Part 2 Driving Ability Test

    The driving ability test requires you to demonstrate your driving. The DVSA is looking for a very high standard on many types of roads including towns, country roads, fast dual carriageways and motorways. Additionally, throughout the test you will need to perform various manoeuvres as well as completing 20 minutes of independent driving, where you will be required to follow traffic signs or directions from a Sat Nav.


    Your JCM driving instructor will help you develop your skills by improving your knowledge and boosting your confidence to meet the required standards. They will conduct many practice sessions with you prior to you taking the test.


    There's also an eyesight check which requires you to read a number plate from a distance of 26.5 meters.


    The test lasts approximately 60 minutes and you are allowed up to 6 minor faults throughout this time.

  • Part 3 Instructional Ability Test

    For the instructional ability test, the DVSA examiner will observe while you give one of your pupils a driving lesson, which pupil is up to you. They will be assessing you on your ability to teach safe and responsible driving and will mark you on lesson planning, risk management, teaching and learning strategies, scoring your performance at the end. Before attempting this test we would recommend that you have a minimum of 40 hours training.

How long does it take to pass?


The national average is around 6 to 12 months. However, this will depend on your availability and commitment.


Several factors which could effect the completion time:


Time and commitment. DBS approval. DVSA test dates. Learning pace. Lifestyle.

Trainee PDI licence:

Provided you have completed a minimum of 40 hours of training, you will be eligible to receive a trainee PDI licence after passing the first 2 parts.

Once you've obtained your PDI licence you will be able to start giving actual driving lessons. This is an extremely effective way to enhance your instructional ability skills ahead of your part 3 test, and also means you can make a living as a driving instructor with JCM Driving School.


Please note that your trainee licence will be valid for six months only. We strongly recommend you complete all the hours your instructor has advised before attempting to take part 3. On passing your part 3 test you can apply to be added to the DVSA register of approved driving instructors.
